A week has gone since the Nettech classes begun. Organised by ISTE Manipal at NLH 104 from 5 till “whenever the guard anna permits us”. Nettech classes focus on networking solutions, internet protocols and data security. Ethical Hacking and Web Server Designing and Management also form a part. Classes are being taken by Mr. Swapan Purkait, the man responsible for sharing computer networking gyaan to make us certified professionals in networking, as he says after the 15 day classes of total 60 hours.
The classes started with the topic of IP (Internet Protocol) addressing wherein students were taught about the different types of IP addresses available, the difference between IPv4 and IPv6, and the reason for non-existence of IPv4 addresses. He taught us on how an IP works and concepts on network and broadcast address, which assigns a particular network to a range of IPs. Subnetting wherein each IP is broken down into different parts and the Internet Service Provider has choice to distribute the range of IPs, was taught. We were briefed on CIDR which is Classless Inter Domain Routing and VLSM Variable Less Subnet Masking which was a part of a Cisco Certified Network Consultant Course. Apart from all this technical mumbo jumbo he also showed us live demos of how things work on the internet, how you access sites and how these IP come into play.
Students were amazed to see sites like Google.com, facebook.com etc. had numerous servers and IPs located around the globe. He showed us the path our PC takes to receive and send data from any given site. He even joked saying “if our parents had invested in buying IPs (any address on the Internet) then we could have been billionaires by selling those IPs today.”
Students learnt to boot Linux simultaneously on their machine using VMWare which is a Virtual Machine Software which runs both Windows and any other OS simultaneously! , that basically means the laptops that you (a normal MIT student has) can work as two different laptops and you can internally connect them to share data. It isn’t that you boot one OS the other won’t work, with VMWare and Telnet both will work simultaneously and using Telnet protocol we could send data between these systems, thus we would achieve an Inception like network within a laptop itself.
Routing was also taught wherein we had to make a virtual simulation of a real life network which had various components. The students were given an exercise where they had to connect 4 PCs form different networks via routers and switches and he explained us how these work. Routing he said is a means to transfer data form one corner of the earth to another.
Our latest assignment was to connect two computers and make one a domain name server and other a web server and access the web page from one computer to another just like the Internet works, thus we made a miniature version of the NET itself in NLH
Everyday a test of 10 marks is conducted, which can range from creating a network to accessing some information on some site.
One week still remains for the classes to get over I wonder what next will we venture in the Networking world.
